ARTH 2300 - Arts and Cultures of Asia - Writing Intensive

Hours: 3
Asia is the largest continent on the planet, it holds most of the world’s human population; it is home to the world’s largest democracy; it is the birthplace of most major religions practiced in the world today; and it is a powerhouse for the contemporary art world. Arts and Cultures of Asia is a selective study of Asia’s arts and visual cultures as aesthetic objects and as material expressions of complex cultural, religious, and political contexts, both locally and interculturally. Works examined range from the ancient period to the present day and are drawn from cultures as far west as Turkey and east to Japan. Students consider how this extremely diverse region uses creativity, art, and visual culture to promote tradition, to activate change, to establish identity, to sustain societal well-being, and to support individual spiritual journeys.
Notes: Cross-listed with INST 2624. Eligible to be taken as pass/fail.
