Mission and Programs

The Department of Psychology consists of six full-time faculty members and several part-time faculty. It is the mission of the Department to 1) support the liberal arts mission of Otterbein College, 2) provide students with a solid grounding in the scientific method, 3) develop student proficiency in models and applications of psychology, 4) develop student critical thinking, empirical skills, and tolerance for complexity, 5) promote an appreciation for diversity and individual differences, 6) encourage a deeper and more nuanced understanding of world, culture, and self, and 7) support life-long learning. To these ends, we seek to prepare students for graduate education and careers in psychology and related fields.

The psychology program provides numerous opportunities for students to participate directly in research in areas such as social psychology, child development, perceptual and cognitive processes, stress management, cultural influences, assessment, and memory. Students may also choose from a variety of independent studies and internships.

The department sponsors both a major and a minor in psychology and offers one of the freshman year social science options in Integrative Studies.

Program Outcome

In general, the psychology program prepares its graduates for the next stage in their intellectual and professional development. The program provides preparation for graduate school, other advanced professional education, and employment in psychology or related fields.
