PHRE 1100 - Introduction to Religion - Writing Intensive

Hours: 3
An introduction to the academic study of religion. This course takes a “practical” approach to studying religion: we will examine religions not as sets of abstract ideas but as enacted in practices and contested in politics. We will not assume that religions simply exist as clearly stated sets of beliefs and rules in texts somewhere but will approach them as what people do. Course will examine a variety of disciplinary approaches to studying religion (including history, anthropology, sociology, psychology, and comparative religions among others), and a wide variety of perspectives on the subject. This course will explore critical terms that have helped to define the field, such as myth, ritual, colonialism, experience, gender, authority, sacrifice, and belief, among others. We will use these terms to think critically and comparatively about examples from a variety of traditions from around the world.
