Applicants who are pursuing the Adapted Physical Education (APE) Endorsement will be admitted to enroll in the 12 graduate semester hours required for completing of the Endorsement. A licensed Physical Educator K-12 may add the Adapted Physical Education Endorsement to a valid Ohio Teaching License.

This program emphasizes pedagogy and is designed for individuals who wish to improve and expand professional teaching skills. Practitioners enrolled in this program are typically interested in continuing a teaching career and preparing to meet the educational needs of all students. After completing this endorsement, practitioners may assume any or all of the following roles: direct service provider (hands-on teaching); consultant for physical education and special education staff providing educational instruction for individuals with disabilities; Individual Education Plan (IEP) Committee member who helps develop the IEP in the psychomotor domain; in-service educator, providing training for people who will provide physical education instruction for individuals with disabilities; student and parent advocate; program coordinator who develops curricular materials, develops intra and inter-agency collaboratives to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities, and monitors progress on IEP’s.

The APE Endorsement requires a minimum of 200 hours of field experience. Field hours are distributed across the four required courses, culminating in a substantive field requirement (100 hours) working in an Adapted Physical Education setting with a teacher endorsed in Adapted Physical Education in PHED 6500. Student performance in the field is formally evaluated by a university-appointed supervisor.

Completion of the program meets the Adapted Physical Education national standard requirements preparing candidates to take the Adapted Physical Education National Standards (APENS) examination. Candidates who successfully pass the exam will receive a certification documenting that they are a Certified Adapted Physical Educator (CAPE) and will be able to list the initials CAPE after their name.
