INST 3020 - Environment and Cultural Heritage in Italy and the United States

The average American produces about 15 tons of CO2 each year, while the average Italian produces only 5 tons per year. How do we account for this difference? Do Italians live without phones & computers? Are their homes and businesses dimly lit or without heat and air conditioning? Don’t Italians drive or fly? Comparing Italian to American lifestyles and infrastructure such as housing, transportation, industry, purchase of goods & services, and food production & consumption, to investigate and explain our different environmental impacts. These investigations will feature comparative interviews with American and Italian citizens. Also examines environmental effects such as air quality and climate change on efforts to preserve Italian cultural heritage such as architecture (particularly in the historic city of Venice).
Prerequisites: Jr standing or above, and a minimum of one course from at least four of the following INST threads: 2000, 2200, 2400, 2600, and 2800. Not open to students with credit for any INST 3000-level course.
