INST 2219 - Islam and Muslim Cultures

Introduction to the academic study of Islam and Muslim cultures around the globe from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. Topics may include the Qur’an, history of Islam in light of its major expressions, Sunni and Shi’a; the Sufis; the many ways that Muslims have formulated Islam throughout the world according to cultural and geographic context; Islam and global popular musics; the role that Islam has played in the politics of the United States and the world community, particularly in the wake of immigration policies, the World Trade Center attack on 9/11, and the subsequent U.S.-led military actions in Afghanistan and Iraq; and Chinese ethnic cleansing of Uygur and other Muslims. The course raises questions of gender, authority, mysticism, nationalism, and law, among others.
