INST 3027 - Stigma and Stories: Transformational Intersections of Literature and Medicine

Hours: 3
Literature and creative expression are the tools through which healthcare providers, writers, and patients better understand illness and each other. Storytelling serves to untangle the natural history and meaning of disease both at the individual and community level. In this course, we will explore relatable and controversial medical themes through the lens of poetry, short-stories, journalism, graphic novels, fiction, and plays. We will compare and contrast the cultures of writing and medicine to explore the benefits of intersection. We will open a dialogue on the theme that all health is public health and explore this across time and backgrounds. Humanities offer a toolbox to anyone who is interested in understanding, thriving, and finding meaning in their personal or professional relationship with sickness and health.
Prerequisites: Jr standing or above, and a minimum of one course from at least four of the following INST threads: 2000, 2200, 2400, 2600, and 2800. Not open to students with credit for any INST 3000-level course.
