ARTH 3600 - African & African American Art History

Hours: 3
Surveys African and African American art from the earliest visual records to the present day. Using a regional approach, students explore a range of traditional African arts (sculpture, masks, beadwork, hair braiding, body marking, and ritual objects) and their central connection to human life cycles. Modern and contemporary African and African American art, including the work of Wangechi Mutu, Kara Walker, Beyoncé, and many others, are studied in their local and global contexts. Stylistic and cultural connections between African and African American art also are examined. Otterbein’s commitment to Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation, on-campus exhibitions, and other programming will be incorporated into the course’s engaged learning.
