INST 2017 - ”The Problem We All Live With”: Race, Education, and Segregation in Central Ohio (and beyond)

Hours: 3
The title of this course, “The Problem We All Live With,” comes from a podcast narrated by the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones, who has written extensively and critically on US school segregation.  We will study the history and current state of school segregation, integration, and re-segregation in central Ohio (and across the US).  Using the paradigm of Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation (TRHT) - a campus initiative at Otterbein - we will examine a more honest history of how American education systems have promoted racial hierarchy and caused harm.  We will also think about ways to dismantle the racial hierarchy in education.  Part of the course will concentrate on learning the methods of oral history and conducting oral history interviews.
