EDUC 5380 - Literacies for Young Adolescents

Hours: 3
This course introduces participants to the theories and practices of teaching reading and writing in the middle grades. It is grounded in and builds on knowledge and understanding of the linguistic foundations of literacy learning and of young adolescent development. The emphases of the course are the multiple psychological and social processes that contribute to reading comprehension and the methods, techniques, and materials of instruction that promote and motivate students’ comprehension of texts in all content area classes. This course also stresses the thinking and decision-making processes teachers use to ensure high-quality literacy learning environments and instruction that allows young adolescents to experience authentic interactions and transactions with text. Prerequisites: Current BCI/FBI background check must be on file in the Education Department.
