MAJOR REQUIREMENTS (82 hrs)

NOTES

  • Students are admitted to the Nursing program once per year. The application deadline is the last Friday in January in order to begin in Fall Semester of the same year.
  • Prerequisites that must be completed prior to starting are: BIO 1810, 1820; CHEM 1100, 1110. INST 1501, or 1502 or 1503; PSYC 1000, 2000.
  • A minimum grade of “C+” is required in all nursing (NURS) courses. To proceed in the sequence of nursing courses, all prerequisite nursing courses must be completed with a “C+” or better.
  • A student receiving two (2) grades of C or lower in the original attempt in all nursing courses; or C-  or lower in BIO 1810, 1820, 2800, 2900; CHEM 1100, 1110; MATH 1240; PSYC 1000, 2000; or any combination of these courses will no longer be able to continue in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program. A student may attempt only one nursing course twice in the BSN Program. An attempt is defined as being enrolled in a course beyond the twenty-fifth class day. Receiving a grade of C or lower or a W (withdrawal) in the original attempt of any nursing course will constitute an attempt.
  • Classes are offered during the day only. The NURS courses require three years to complete. There is no accelerated option.
  • Nursing program students must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT

In order to graduate from any university a student should take a significant portion of the hours for his or her program of study from that university, take a significant proportion of hours in the major from that university, and take a significant proportion of the “signature elements” of that university’s general education requirements.

At Otterbein, at least 36 credit hours of coursework must be taken in Otterbein classes. MATH 0900 cannot be used to help fulfill this requirement.  Of these hours:

  • at least 9 credit hours must be taken in each of a student’s majors at the 3000 level or above,
  • at least 5 credit hours (any level) must be taken in each minor, and
  • at least one INST 2XXX thread course, INST 3XXX, and an SYE course must be taken at Otterbein.

REQUIRED TOTAL HOURS FOR DEGREE (120)

If the coursework taken to fulfill the General Education Requirements and the requirements in your major do not equal 120 hours, select a sufficient number of electives to achieve that total. In most cases, taking elective work to reach 120 hours will not be necessary since all courses required for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program total 121 hours. If any coursework is waived or is transferred for less credit than its Otterbein equivalent, electives may be necessary in order to reach 121hours.

MINIMUM GPA

A GPA of 2.0 overall as well as in the major must be achieved.

APPLICATION FOR DEGREE

A prospective graduate must complete an Application for Degree with the Office of the Registrar one term prior to the term in which the degree is to be completed.
