MAJOR REQUIREMENTS (33 hrs)

Concentrations (9 hrs)

Choose three courses within each concentration. (3 credit hours each, unless noted)

Note: WGSS majors must declare a three-course concentration in the subject of their choosing. The concentration is designed to encourage coherent inquiry into an issue, period, field, discipline, thematic, critical problem, or research question in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Students may choose from a list of standard options for the concentration (see below) or design one of their own with the approval of the WGSS director. The courses that are identified with established concentrations are to be understood as likely and possible contributions to these concentrations, not a fixed slate of choices. A student can make the case to the WGSS director for any WGSS-affiliated course to satisfy an existing or self-designed concentration area.

Individualized Concentration

  • Designed by the student and approved by the WGSS director. Have the WGSS director notify the Registrar in writing of the course selections.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT

In order to graduate from any university a student should take a significant portion of the hours for his or her program of study from that university, take a significant proportion of hours in the major from that university, and take a significant proportion of the “signature elements” of that university’s general education requirements.

At Otterbein, at least 36 credit hours of coursework must be taken in Otterbein classes. MATH 0900 cannot be used to help fulfill this requirement.  Of these hours:

  • at least 9 credit hours must be taken in each of a student’s majors at the 3000 level or above,
  • at least 5 credit hours (any level) must be taken in each minor, and
  • at least one INST 2XXX thread course, INST 3XXX, and an SYE course must be taken at Otterbein.

REQUIRED TOTAL HOURS FOR DEGREE (120)

If the coursework taken to fulfill the General Education Requirements and the requirements in your major do not equal 120 credit hours, select a sufficient number of electives to achieve that total.

MINIMUM GPA

A GPA of 2.0 overall as well as in the major must be achieved.

APPLICATION FOR DEGREE

A prospective graduate must complete an Application for Degree with the Office of the Registrar one term prior to the term in which the degree is to be completed.
