MAT, Special Education

I. General Education Requirements


All MAT candidates in the Special Education program are required to have 20 semester hours of general education coursework in the following areas.

A. English (4 hrs required)


  • ENGL 1000 - 4999 4 hrs
  • INST 1500 - 1599 4 hrs

B. Mathematics (4 hrs required)


  • MATH 1000 - 4999 4 hrs

C. Arts/Humanities (4 hrs required)


  • INST 2200 - 2299 4 hrs
  • INST 2600 - 2699 4 hrs
  • Approved course in art, dance, music, philosophy or theatre. Have MAT program director notify Registrar of approved course. 4 hrs

D. Science (4 hrs required)


  • BIO 1000 - 4999 4 hrs
  • CHEM 1000 - 4999 4 hrs
  • ESCI 1000 - 4999 4 hrs
  • INST 2400 - 2499 4 hrs

E. Social Studies (4 hrs required)


  • HIST 1000 - 4999 4 hrs
  • INST 2000 - 2099 4 hrs
  • POLS 1000 - 4999 4 hrs
  • PSYC 1000 - 4999 4 hrs

II. Graduate Professional Education Requirements


Note: A minimum grade of C must be achieved in all EDUC courses.
All MAT candidates in the Special Education program are required to take the following professional education coursework. The course descriptions contain information about required field hours and course sequence.

III. Other Professional Education Requirements (all courses required)


        1 course from:

  • EDUC 2100 - Educational Technology: Adolescence 2 hrs
  • EDUC 2300 - EducationalTechnology: Early Childhood 2 hrs

        1 course from:

        1 course from:

  • EDUC 1700 - Phonics and Language Study: Early Childhood 4 hrs
  • EDUC 1710 - Phonics and Language Study: Middle Childhood 4 hrs

V. Concentration Area (select one or both Concentrations)


VI. Minimum GPA


An overall GPA of 3.0 must be achieved.

VIII. Application for Degree


A prospective graduate must complete an Application for Degree at the Registrar’s Office two terms prior to the term in which the degree is to be completed.
