MAT, Middle Childhood Education

I. General Education Requirements (20 hrs)


All MAT candidates in the Middle Childhood program are required to have 20 semester hours of general education coursework in the following areas. Some of the courses listed below also appear on the list of required professional education courses.

A. English (4 hrs required)


  • ENGL 1000 - 4999 4 hrs
  • INST 1500 - 1599 4 hrs

B. Mathematics (4 hrs required)


  • MATH 1000 - 4999 4 hrs

C. Arts/Humanities (4 hrs required)


  • INST 2200 - 2299 4 hrs
  • INST 2600 - 2699 4 hrs
  • Approved course in art, dance, music, philosophy or theatre. Have MAT program director notify Registrar of approved course. 4 hrs

D. Science (4 hrs required)


  • BIO 1000 - 4999 4 hrs
  • CHEM 1000 - 4999 4 hrs
  • ESCI 1000 - 4999 4 hrs
  • INST 2400 - 2499 4 hrs

E. Social Studies (4 hrs required)


  • HIST 1000 - 4999 4 hrs
  • INST 2000 - 2099 4 hrs
  • POLS 1000 - 4999 4 hrs
  • PSYC 1000 - 4999 4 hrs

II. Graduate Professional Education Requirements (34 hrs)


Note: A minimum grade of C must be achieved in all EDUC courses.
All MAT candidates in the Middle Childhood program are required to take the following professional education coursework. The course descriptions contain information about required field hours and course sequence.

III. Other Professional Education Requirements (13-14 hrs)

B. Reading


  • EDUC 1710 - Phonics and Language Study: Middle Childhood 4 hrs

    1 course from:
  • EDUC 3630 - Adolescent Literature in a Comprehensive Reading Program 4 hrs
  • EDUC 3800 - Literacies in the Content Area 4 hrs

IV. Concentration Areas (two are required; 51-58 hrs)


Coursework in two approved teaching concentration areas are required. Specific course requirements are outlined below. Students may receive credit for some of these courses through previous undergraduate work to be determined by a transcript evaluation.

    Note: Candidates who do not transfer in credit for MATH 1700 must take a math placement test in order to determine whether additional prerequisite coursework is needed.

V. Minimum GPA


An overall GPA of 3.0 must be achieved.

 

VI. Application for Degree


A prospective graduate must complete an Application for Degree at the Registrar’s Office two terms prior to the term in which the degree is to be completed.
