FYS 1086 - Cultures of Consumption: Food, Intoxicants, and the Human Experience

Hours: 3
Centers on two essential aspects of the human experience: how we sustain ourselves and how we mediate our experience of the world. By reading, writing, watching, thinking, and talking about food, alcohol, and other altered states, we will reach a deeper understanding of ourselves, our community, and our own and other cultures. To do so, we’ll engage with a variety of texts: poems, excerpts from novels, essays, short films, feature-length films, podcasts, Instagram and TikTok accounts, cookbooks, restaurant reviews, and archives. The goals are both to understand what’s happening in these texts and to learn how to approach and analyze them to develop skills that can be used in future classes.
