INST 3023 - The Tonic of Wildness: Explorations in Food Justice, Living Deliberately, and Manual Labor

Hours: 3
Brings two distinct disciplinary perspectives together to explore the value and importance of living in close relationship with the land. We will critically examine the social, economic, and cultural forces that influence the food system, environmental landscapes, and social justice activism. We will consider our relationship to nature and the value of a simpler, more self-reliant, quieter life. Our explorations will be grounded in the works of Henry David Thoreau and other contemporary essayists. The course will require students to connect with nature, to be engaged with others, and to “do something” in the world to contribute to the public good.
Prerequisites: Jr standing or above, and a minimum of one course from at least four of the following INST threads: 2000, 2200, 2400, 2600, and 2800. Not open to students with credit for any INST 3000-level course.
