PHRE 3500 - Religion, Race, and Ethnicity

A critical examination of the significant intersections among religion, race, ethnicity both in the United States and around the world. Confronting important and often controversial issues, challenging ourselves to become more aware of the social and cultural experiences of others, and also deepening awareness of the impact that race and ethnicity might have on their own experience. Topics may include magic and caste in colonial Mexico, conversion to traditionally ethnic religions, religious nationalism, the Nation of Islam, the KKK in the United States, racial ideologies in Mormon traditions, religion and racial passing, and anti-Semitism in modern contexts.
Notes: Eligible to be taken as pass/fail.
