INST 2815 - Preservation of Cultural Heritage

What do we mean by cultural heritage? How does it change over space and time? How are changing values reflected in our cultural heritage objects? Once we decide a cultural heritage object is worth preserving, conservation treatments are completed. How have the ethics of and approaches to conservation changed over time and between different cultures? Undertaking a global exploration of historic artefacts and structures that express culture and identity, focused on Italian cultural identity, mainly expressed in its art and architecture, and the introduction to the people and agencies who work to preserve Italian cultural heritage. Examining the exchange of practices between Italian city-states, between Italy and other European countries, and their impact on cultural heritage objects; how changing values and historical events have impacted cultural heritage objects in Italy; and how these continue to impact cultural heritage today. Topics include restoration and technical art case studies to understand how cultural heritage objects are conserved, how those practices vary across cultures and how they have changed over time from the Early Modern period to contemporary practices. Further issues such as the impact of tourism, military conflict, looting and repatriation, and climate change on cultural heritage, contemporary spaces and conservation of cultural heritage objects are also considered. Develops a stronger cross-cultural lens through which to examine cultural heritage and issues surrounding its preservation, and global citizens who engage with important issues from around the world.
