INST 2812 - Experiencing Culture in Italy: The Psychology of Getting Lost and Finding Love

Hours: 3
Investigating the psychological research and theories of the four broad topics of Gender, Culture, Travel, and Love, both individually, but more importantly, as they all intersect. We will study Italian cultural identity (e.g., social institutions, art, literature, religion, and food). We will examine Italian literature and art with an eye toward the historical view of gender and the role of religion in influencing gender roles and romantic relationships. We will discuss the psychology of travel, and the process of getting lost (and finding ourselves) in unexpected places. We will also analyze personal accounts of romantic love, written in letters to the “Secretaries of Juliet” (a volunteer team of men and women, based in Verona, Italy, who give advice to those who write). Italy has long been considered the “Land of Love,” and we will see how and why it has earned this reputation, and experience it first-hand.
