EDUC 6370 - Early Childhood Special Education

Hours: 4
This course is designed for those seeking an Intervention Specialist license. Course participants will examine formal and informal assessment measures, assistive technology, speech, language, social, emotional, cognitive, gross, and fine motor skill development in early childhood students. A 100-hour field placement in special needs pre-K - 3rd Grade classrooms will provide participants with the opportunity to utilize their knowledge in that classroom as they plan, differentiate, and implement lessons in accordance with student Individualized Education Plans. Participants will also use both formal and informal assessment to identify, develop, and implement a single-subject action research project, based on current literature, within the context of their 100-hour field placement. Projects will focus on one child or a small group of children who demonstrate deficits in one of the six domains used to identify young children for placement in special education programs. In addition, the course will examine special education legislation, rules, and regulations as well as service delivery options, and intervention strategies (working with families will be emphasized). Evaluation for this course will be based on the participants’ ability to meet the Early Childhood Special Needs standards as developed by Council for Exceptional Children.

Notes:
100 off campus field hours required. Current BCI/FBI Background check must be on file in the Education office. Teacher candidates must achieve a grade of C or better.
