SYE 4508 - Nepal

Hours: 4
This travel course will take students to Nepal, one of the most diverse and exciting nations on earth.  While there, students will spend two weeks studying Tibetan Buddhist philosophy with Tibetan monks, experiencing this ancient tradition first hand.  Students will then spend a week learning through service by volunteering at a local Buddhist NGO (non-governmental organization).  Finally, students will spend a week trekking in the Himalayan Mountains, engaging with Buddhism in its traditional context in one of the most beautiful regions in the world.  Throughout, emphasis will be placed on Buddhism as a complex, lived religion.  Students will study Buddhist philosophy, then observe as those principles are enacted in the contexts of an urban NGO and a rural village.  Through such experiential, hands-on learning, students will achieve a rich and subtle understanding of the Buddhist tradition and its place in modern society.
Notes: International travel is required; extra fee required.
