INST 3555 - Creating Community-Based Art for Civic Engagement

Hours: 4
This course invites students to study and act upon the impact of community based art. Students will partner with a nonprofit organization to serve, conduct research on organizational needs, and plan and implement a community arts project that is designed to positively impact the goals and mission of the organization or to draw community members into participating in creative action. We will examine the assets that nonprofit leaders and artists bring to the work and students will consider their own strengths in light of the collaborative work of the class. In each session, we will further our understanding through case studies and through discussion of the stages of a sustained community project: including making contact, conducting research, assessing needs, finding partners, taking action, evaluating effectiveness, and expanding on the work.
