ANTH 2000 - Social Justice in the Americas: Anthropological Perspectives

Hours: 4
In this course, students will examine contemporary social movements in the Western hemisphere. We will begin with an overview of the historical roots of today’s social and cultural conflicts, examining the impact of European and US imperialism in shaping hemispheric inequalities and cultural identities. From there, we will look at case studies of contemporary social movements and gain an understanding of their interests, claims, and forms of organizing. Our case studies will include a look at indigenous rights movements, factory takeovers and “autonomous organizing” in Argentina, and new labor movements among immigrants in the United States.
Prerequisites: ANTH 1000 or permission of instructor.
