ANTH 1100 - Introduction to Cultural Geography

Hours: 4
Human beings come from, inhabit, and shape particular spaces. This course explores the central role of landscape as a repository of cultural meaning and group identification. Space becomes place through the cultural process of assigning, contesting, and reproducing that meaning. While some of the material will draw from cross-cultural comparisons, our primary focus will be the cultural landscape of the United States. Themes of particular interest include the cultural-historical narrative of westward expansion and the “frontier,” the emergence of “suburban” as a landscape form for human habitation in the US, the “border” as an imagined and policed boundary of the territorial nation-state, and the links between economic restructuring, waste dumping and the abandonment of certain places under conditions of “blight.”
