Institutional Mission

The mission of Otterbein University is to educate the whole person in a context that fosters the development of humane values. Otterbein is a private, church-related, coeducational University that sponsors traditional and continuing education programs of liberal arts and professional education at Baccalaureate and Master’s levels. Our commitment is to the liberal arts as the broad base of all learning.

Our Philosophy

Otterbein University, affiliated with the United Methodist Church, is grounded in a Christian heritage that fosters concern for purpose and meaning in life, the dignity of persons, and the significance of community. This tradition offers dialogue with other faiths and philosophies, intellectual stimulation, openness to the day’s issues, and incentive to new understanding. Thus, Otterbein University seeks students, faculty and staff who represent societal diversity. The University maintains an openness to all qualified persons and does not discriminate with regard to race, sex, religion, ancestry, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, disabling condition, political affiliation, veteran status or marital status.

Otterbein University holds disciplinary accreditation and approval through the American Association for Health Education, the American Chemical Society, the Commission on the Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Athletic Training, the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, the National Association of Schools of Music, the National Association of Schools of Theatre, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, and the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. Additionally, Otterbein University belongs to the American Council on Education, the Association of American Colleges and Universities, the Council of Independent Colleges, and the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges, and is approved by the University Senate of the United Methodist Church.

The provisions of this Catalog are not to be regarded as an irrevocable contract between the student and Otterbein University. This Catalog has attempted to present information regarding admission requirements and the general rules and regulations of the University in as accurate and up-to-date fashion as possible. This does not, however, preclude the possibility of changes taking place during the academic year. If such changes occur, they will be publicized through normal channels and will be included in the next edition of the Catalog.
