  • MUSC 1080 - Concert Attendance

    Hours: 0
    Hearing live performance is an essential component of improving musicianship. This course provides music majors with a broad exposure to live musical performances. In addition, this course is important as a means of providing audience support for programming in the Department of Music and the community. Through this course, concert etiquette also will be reinforced. During each semester music students will be required to attend eight performances selected from the Department of Music Concert Calendar (one of the eight may be off campus, but must be approved) and twelve “Thursdays in Battelle” programs.
    Notes: Students must complete 6 semesters of MUSC 1080.
  
  • MUSC 1081 - Introduction to Music Profession

    The course offers BA in Music and BM majors the opportunity to begin to make connections between their music study, the total academic program, and post-undergraduate activities. This class will also provide students a setting in which to share their perceptions about their intended profession; this process will in turn create a supportive atmosphere to ease the transition from high school to college, and eventually, to the workplace.

  • MUSC 2000 - Music Theory III: Renaissance Through Classical Styles

    Styles of the Late Renaissance through the Classical Period: Late Renaissance Polyphony, 18th Century Counterpoint, Fugue, Variation Technique, Sonata and Rondo Forms, and Harmony. Composition projects will be included.

    Compositional techniques and analysis of music from the Romantic Period through the present: Character Pieces, Lieder, Post-Romantic Harmony, Impressionism, Primitivism, Neoclassicism, Pandiatonicism, Set Theory, Serialism, Indeterminacy, Electronic and Computer Music, and Minimalism. Composition Projects will be included.

    Techniques for setting words to music, creating harmonies to accompany melodies, creating written accompaniments for melodies, and composing in classical, folk and pop styles for voice. Students will set lyrics as assigned to music, and there will be an opportunity to work with original lyrics as well. Note that the course deals with setting words to music, not with the craft of writing lyrics. Students should be familiar with basic music notation.

  • MUSC 2023 - Keyboard Musicianship Skills

    This course is intended for music students majoring in piano (BA in Music; BA in Music and Business; BME in Music Education; BMUS in Performance). Students will develop skills in improvisation (in jazz and classical styles), sight-reading, score reading and keyboard harmonization (including realization of figured bass and lead-sheet symbols). Completion of the course at a C or higher constitutes completion of the piano proficiency requirement for piano majors.

Through active listening students will become familiar with the musical styles of the period. Structured writing assignments will reflect professional scholarship in the field of music.
    Prerequisites and Corequisites: MUSC 2001 taken at the same time as 2040; or 2001 with a grade of C or better if taken previously; or permission of instructor.
  
  • MUSC 2041 - Special Topics in World Music

    Hours: 2
    This is a seminar course designed to provide in-depth study of a specific world music topic. The subject matter offered in this course will be determined by available teaching expertise and is designed to change with each offering. Readings, listening and bibliography appropriate to the area will be required. A significant research or analysis project (or performance project) in the area of study will be one required outcome.
    Prerequisites: MUSC 1001 with a grade of C or better.
  
  • MUSC 2042 - Special Topics in Instrumental Literature

    A survey of musical theatre history and repertoire in Western music, with an emphasis on twentieth century American Musical Theatre. Open to all students, with a required performance component for Sophomore BFA musical theatre students. All other students complete a term paper in lieu of the performance component.

  • MUSC 2050 - Electro-Acoustic Music

    Hours: 2
    An introduction to the history and literature of electro-acoustic music, with hands-on application of some of the most commonly used practices. Topics include basic acoustics, MIDI sequencing, digital audio recording and editing, digital signal processing, and working in a digital audio workstation environment.
    Prerequisites: MUSC 1050 with a grade of C or better, or permission of the instructor.

    Students will examine elements of music theory common to all music containing improvisation with specific attention given to historically significant compositions in the jazz genre.

    The first course in a two-course sequence that focuses on various aspects of the music industry. Topics addressed over the two courses will include an overview of the music industry and its history; merchandising and retailing; artist and concert management; music technology and data sources in the music industry; and entrepreneurship.

    Hours: 4
    A survey of the history of women and their contributions to the world of music. In addition to learning about the important roles women have played in the development of music, students will also investigate the origins and progression of feminism, explore contemporary feminist philosophy and criticism, and consider the future of this ideal in regards to music and the arts.
    Notes: This course may be used as a substitute for the INST Creativity and Culture (INST 2600’s) requirement.
  
  • MUSC 3043 - Art Song Literature

    Hours: 2
    A survey course designed to provide an introduction to a song repertoire c. 1580 - present. The primary material to be covered includes Italian song, German Lied, French Melodie, and British and American song. Russian, Scandinavian, and Spanish repertories will be discussed as time permits. In addition to readings in the text, students will be responsible for listening assignments.
    Prerequisites: One year of applied voice study or permission of instructor.
  
  • MUSC 3044 - Opera Literature

    Hours: 2
    A survey course examining opera literature from its beginnings in late-Renaissance Italy to the latest works from the contemporary period such as John Adams and Philip Glass. Emphases will be placed on works from the standard repertory by Gluck, Mozart, Rossini, Donizetti, Verdi, Wagner, Puccini, and Strauss. Lesser works will be discussed as time permits. In addition to readings in the text, students will be responsible for listening assignments.

  • MUSC 3046 - American Popular Music

    Hours: 4
    Beginning with the early Delta Blues, this course explores the music and artists that provided the context for life in America from 1900 to today. Content is structured to explore both musical topics and social/political climates, as these often went hand in hand. Additional topics will include the development of music journalism throughout the 20th century, influences from abroad, a cursory evaluation of period recording technologies, and a significant critical listening component.
    Notes: This course may be used as a substitute for the INST Creativity and Culture (INST 2600’s) requirement.
  
  • MUSC 3050 - Advanced Electro-Acoustic Music

    Hours: 2
    Advanced techniques and applications of electro-acoustic music practices. Topics include audio and MIDI recording/sequencing techniques as continued from MUSC 2050; introductions to sound synthesis, algorithmic composition, interactive computer music and motion graphics and their application with fixed media and interactive techniques. The course will culminate with a recital of fixed media and interactive class projects.

  • MUSC 3051 - Audio Technology for Performers

    Hours: 2
    Introduction to the theory and practice of audio production and engineering from the perspective of the performer. The application of technology in performance, self-promotion, and collaboration will be discussed.

    First course in the audio production sequence. Examines the acoustics and electrical mechanics of sound production, live sound technique, and basic recording technology.

  • MUSC 3061 - Special Topics in Jazz

    Hours: 2
    Topics might include surveys of small group jazz composers since 1945, combo arranging, jazz composition, jazz pedagogy, and vocal jazz improvisation. Any topic that appeals both to the enrolled students and the instructor is open for examination.

  • MUSC 3082 - Instrumental Pedagogy and Literature I

    The first of two courses designed to meet the needs of students desiring a career in instrumental performance and/or studio teaching. Students will gain a basic knowledge of the literature encountered in studio teaching. This course will emphasize the practical aspects of running a studio and managing a career as a free-lance musician.
    Prerequisites: One year of applied instrumental study or permission of instructor.

    An exploration of the vocal mechanism. This course is designed to provide students with a basic understanding of the physiology of singing and to provide them with skills necessary to become studio teachers.

  • MUSC 3086 - Piano Pedagogy

    Hours: 2
    The course provides an introduction to the profession of independent studio teaching for pianists and includes topics relevant to the field of piano teaching, a survey of beginning and intermediate piano methods, and interaction with local independent teachers. The course is elective for piano students with concurrent registration in applied piano, and required for pianists in the Bachelor of Music in Performance curriculum.

    Prerequisites: MUSC 2001 with a grade of C or better, or permission of instructor.
